We are grateful to the USGA for selecting Bandon Dunes to host the 27th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. A total of 4,426 players entered the Championship and after qualifying at 67 sites around the country, 264 golfers made the pilgrimage to Bandon. After rounds of stroke play on Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails, the low 64 qualifiers advanced to match play on Bandon Dunes. The final match featured Trip Kuehne from Irving, Texas versus Dan Whitaker from Cle Elum, Washington. Kuehne won four of the first six holes, led 6up after the morning 18 holes, and went on to win the 36-hole final in convincing fashion, 9 and 7. His victory capped off a phenomenal season during which he was a member of the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team and a member of the team representing the state of Texas that won the U.S. State Team Championship. Kuehne also made history as the third member of his family to win a USGA Championship, following his brother, Hank ('98 U.S. Amateur) and sister, Kelli ('96 and '96 U.S. Women's Amateur). We thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the USGA staff, committee and officials in the crowning of a national champion.
We are pleased to announce that construction is beginning on several new projects around the Resort. The Inn at Bandon Dunes is located just south of the 18th green on Bandon Dunes and will feature 39 rooms with golf course or coastal forest views. A permanent clubhouse will replace the temporary facility at Pacific Dunes, which has served us well since 2001. The new two-story clubhouse will feature a larger golf shop and complete food and beverage facilities that offer views of Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes and the Pacific Ocean. Finally, in January we will begin construction in earnest on our fourth golf course, Old Macdonald, designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina. Old Macdonald will open for play in the summer of 2010.
